Class Descriptions
At Root, yoga is a foundational practice that we encourage for everyone, as it truly synergizes mind, body and spirit. And, while we believe it is fundamental, we recognize that wellness and health are as dynamic as life and at various times in one’s journey, one may need additional support or variety to attain their goals. Therefore, Root offers other types of movement classes (such as Circuit, Pilates, Rhythm and Prenatal Yoga) which can be beneficially integrated into your practice.
All yoga and movement classes are open to every fitness level and can be modified to accommodate any level of practice . If you are new to any of our classes, please be sure to advise your instructor. We invite all to start or enhance your journey with us. Namaste.
Yoga Basics || 1.5 hours
A slower paced Hatha yoga practice designed for students newer to yoga as well as continuing students looking for deeper instruction. This class is paced to allow adequate time to investigate the alignment of postures as well as yoga breathing techniques.
Mindful Strength Movement || 1 hour
A one-hour fitness class focused on muscle conditioning, cardiovascular performance and core stabilization through the use of various resistance tools (bands, stability balls, body weight and help from fellow students). From squats to pilates to abs to pushups, the format of the class will be ever-changing and dynamic, to allow muscles to be challenged differently for faster results and the opportunity for leaner muscle tone. Lack of boredom also a plus! For those looking for effective, graceful and safe strength building, we encourage you to make a weekly appointment with this class and build it into your practice.
Restorative Yin || 1.5 hours
This class targets the parasymapathetic nervous system, which helps slow down and regulate the entire nervous system. The instructor will be working with poses that help reduce fatigue, create better range of motion in the joints and more availability in the muscle fascia.
Freestyle Yoga || 1.25 hours
Freestyle means that the class is not limited to one particular style: though it is a led class, the content evolves based on who arrives and what’s needed. The intention of Freestyle Yoga is to use your yoga practice to develop your awareness of your self on all levels–physical, emotional, mental, spiritual and energetic--and to grow your capacity to move from your own knowing. There is much permission for the student to not only modify poses, but to find their own practice as they are inspired within the context of the class, and always a few minutes at the end of the class for students to be guided from within.
Active Restorative Yoga || 1.5 hours
Active Restorative is a centered approach to reintegrating the mind, body, and spirit. It is great way to both begin and end a busy week. From the weekend warrior to the multitasking stay-at-home parent, it is a practice that uses yoga alignment and unwinding techniques to challenge, restore, and renew the (over-stressed) body and nervous system. Through optimizing mindful movement and connecting to inner stillness, this revealing practice increases safety and awareness in exercise and other yoga practices.
Vinyasa Yoga || 1 hour & 1 .5 hours
Vinyasa Yoga has been described as a ‘state of grace’. It is a dynamic practice which integrates breath with flowing movement, along with inner and outer alignment, strength, and flexibility. Classes are accompanied by music which helps rejuvenate and balance the practice. Our teachers incorporate their personal expertise and creativity making each vinyasa class an unique experience. The studio is heated to between 80 and 90 degrees and is offered for practitioners of all levels.
Power Vinyasa || 1 .5 hours
Power Vinyasa is a vibrant, inspiring practice which will leave you energized. It combines aspects of yoga practices which include form and alignment, flow and strength, power and balance. Power Vinyasa also emphasizes the continuous steady rhythm of breath. By moving through this rhythm you will deepen awareness and reconnect to the innate knowledge of your body, spirit, and mind. Some call it ‘moving meditation’. This practice is ideal for those who have taken Vinyasa yoga before and are looking for a new challenge, as an increased rigor of flow is implemented and the studio is heated to between 90 and 95 degrees.
Hatha Yoga || 1 .5 hours
Since ‘ha’ means sun and ‘tha’ means
moon, Hatha Yoga is translated as the yoga that brings union of the ‘pairs
of opposites.’ Students are encouraged to concentrate on the inner
experience of the various asanas (positions) so the steadiness of mind
and body becomes evident. Students move into the asanas learning to focus
on alignment and the breath as a means for working and releasing more
deeply, while energizing subtle channels. Hatha Yoga is ideal for those
wanting a moderately paced class.
Hot Yoga || 1.5 hours
Hot Yoga is a series of 26 yoga poses performed in a very heated room. The room is usually maintained at a temperature of 90-105 degrees and is a vigorous yoga class which promotes profuse sweating and rids the body of toxins. Keeping the body very warm throughout the class, the body becomes extraordinarily flexible. Hot Yoga is known for its’ detoxifying benefits and is open to all levels of practice.
Yin Yoga || 1 .5 hours
Yin Yoga is a great way to keep your joints loose
and mobile. It’s a quiet yoga composed of long, deep stretching
held for extended periods of time including passive floor postures. Yin
yoga helps cultivate a meditative mind and targets areas of the body
which are often resistant to active stretching such as the hips, the
pelvis, and the lower spine. It also promotes emotional clearing and
deep physical openings. This class is open to all levels.
Prenatal Yoga || 1.25 hours
To guide you through any stage of motherhood, Prenatal Yoga offers a supportive and safe environment for women preparing for labor, delivery and postpartum. You will learn deep relaxation techniques, strengthening exercises, and relief of common discomforts. Many women decide to continue this practice well beyond the new motherhood stages due to its comfortable and supportive atmosphere.
Qigong || 1.25 hours
Qigong, often described as a moving meditation, is an exercise that
strengthens the body and nervous system through a series of slow movements
formed in synchrony with deep breathing rhythms. Not only does the practice
of qigong have many physical health benefits, continued practice of qigong
