Sibo? Who’s that? And why are they coming to dinner?

SIBO stands for Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth. Think of them as the friends at your party that wreak a bit of havoc in your gut. Your gut always has bacteria, and that in itself is not a bad thing (think pro-biotics, the critters you DO want to boost your digestion). However, sometimes, we get an overgrowth, like weeds in the garden. Normally, these bacteria are kept in check by the types of food you eat and the movement of food in your intestines. When this malfunctions, these bacteria don’t move out of your system fast enough. They may even proliferate, resulting in symptoms like:

  • Abdominal pain: bloating, gas, cramps
  • Both constipation and/or diarrhea
  • Heartburn and nausea

There are even symptoms you wouldn’t normally equate to gut health, such as:

  • Headaches
  • Joint pain
  • Fatigue
  • Skin symptoms (i.e. eczema or rashes)
  • Respiratory symptoms (i.e. asthma)
  • Mood symptoms (i.e. depression)
  • Brain symptoms (i.e. brain fog)

Diagnosis requires a doctor’s visit, and they will most likely put you on a special diet. But that does not mean you need to sacrifice taste! To find out more about SIBO, check out  www.sibodietrecipes.com which has plenty of resources, including some super yummy recipes, created by local Portland Naturopathic Medicine student Samantha Johnson. Mexican Rainbow Pepper Salad with Flank Steak anyone? Yes please! How about Honey Glazed Chicken Wings or Halibut Salad? Oooh, summer BBQs just got way more exciting – who said being healthy can’t be fun?

A healthy grilling tip from our own Dr. Wollman:

“The main thing when grilling meat is to use a marinade that has a vinegar or acid base (like lemon) and lots of spices to cut down on the cancer causing compounds.  This article sums it up well/.
