Watermelon, cucumbers & celery – oh my!

Making sure you are drinking enough water is essential to keeping you healthy and energized. Ideally, you want to drink half of your body weight in ounces. But as the weather gets hotter and we sweat, bumping up your intake is important. Here are a few signs you may becoming dehydrated:

  • Dry, sticky mouth
  • Headache
  • Fatigue/low energy
  • Darker colored urine
  • Constipation
  • Thirst

Eating raw fruits and vegetables is another great way to stay hydrated and energized.

Here are some of my favorite hydrating foods:

Watermelon: Watermelon is almost 92% water, making it one of the juiciest and sweetest foods to keep you hydrated. Make yourself a watermelon mocktail, by blending up watermelon, lime juice and fresh mint.

Cucumber: Cucumber  has the highest water content of any solid food. It is very cooling to the body, a natural diuretic, and it cleanses the skin. Chop it up with some basil and lemon juice for a delicious and uplifting salad.

Celery: Because of its nutrient and high water content, eating celery may neutralize stomach acid and help heartburn. Drinking celery juice with a touch of lemon is a great natural electrolyte drink after a fun day in the sun.

Romaine: Romaine lettuce is a good source of Vitamin K, which is important for bone health. It is 93% water. Try adding romaine to a smoothie instead of kale for a milder taste or use as a wrap.
