Understanding + Overcoming Long COVID Symptoms:

What To Do When You’re “Better,” But Still Don’t Feel Like Yourself

Last fall, a woman we’ll call Sarah sat down in one of our treatment rooms at Root Whole Body.

She looked healthy.

Clear-eyed. Articulate. Thoughtful.

“I had COVID almost a year ago,” she said. “It wasn’t even that bad.”

Pause.

“But I’m not the same.”

She used to hike in Forest Park on weekends. Now a long walk leaves her wiped out.

She used to juggle work and family without thinking about it. Now she loses her train of thought mid-sentence.

Her labs? Normal.

Her doctor? Kind, but unsure what else to do.

“I feel like I should be over this.”

If you’ve said some version of that sentence—this article is for you.

Here’s the quiet reality of Long COVID symptoms...

Most people fully recover after COVID. Some, however, experience ongoing symptoms that don’t resolve as expected.

These symptoms can feel confusing, isolating, and sometimes frightening—especially when standard tests come back “normal.”

Long COVID symptoms don’t always look dramatic.

Sometimes they look like:

  • Fatigue that lingers no matter how early you go to bed
  • Brain fog that makes simple tasks feel weirdly hard
  • Getting winded faster than you used to
  • A nervous system that feels… jumpy
  • Crashing after an activity that used to be easy

It’s not always a crisis.

It’s a slow, frustrating mismatch between who you were and how you feel now.

And here in Portland—where people pride themselves on being active, outdoorsy, and self-aware—that mismatch can feel especially disorienting.

You’re not trying to run a marathon.
You just want to feel back in your body again.

At Root Whole Body, we recognize that persistent post-COVID symptoms are real, complex, and treatable, and that healing often requires a whole person, integrative approach rather than a single medication or diagnosis.

When they say, “Everything looks normal.”

This is the part that gets to people.

You do the responsible thing. You get checked out. You run labs.

And you’re told: “Everything looks normal.”

We want to say this gently:

Standard labs are designed to detect disease. They’re not designed to measure subtle, system-wide strain.

You can have:

  • Nervous system dysregulation
  • Post-viral immune imbalance
  • Ongoing low-grade inflammation
  • Reduced cellular energy production

… and still fall within “normal” ranges.

That doesn’t mean nothing is happening.

It just means your body is struggling in ways our current system doesn’t always measure well.

Ok, so, what’s actually going on then?

Instead of asking, “What’s the one cause?”
We tend to ask, “Which systems are still working too hard?”

With long COVID symptoms, we commonly see:

1. A Nervous System That Never Fully Powered Down

If your body stayed in fight-or-flight during the infection, it may not have fully reset. That can show up as poor sleep, anxiety, reactivity, or feeling wired and tired.

2. An Immune System Still on Alert

Your immune system may still be slightly activated—not enough to make you acutely sick, but enough to drain your energy.

3. Reduced Energy Production

Your cells may not be generating energy efficiently. This is often what’s behind post-exertional crashes—you do something manageable, and then hours later, you’re flattened.

4. Subtle Circulation or Oxygen Shifts

Even small changes in how oxygen moves through tissues can impact stamina and mental clarity.

None of these mean you’re broken. They mean your body hasn’t recalibrated yet.

What Long COVID recovery looks like (and what it doesn’t)

If you’re hoping for a quick fix, we want to be honest with you:

Healing from long COVID symptoms usually isn’t dramatic.

It’s not a one-week transformation.

It looks more like:

  • Fewer crashes
  • Clearer mornings
  • Being able to do a little more without paying for it
  • Sleep that feels restorative again
  • Brain fog lifting slowly, almost imperceptibly

It’s steady. Layered. Intentional.

At Root Whole Body, we focus on supporting the systems that need recalibration—not forcing the body to perform.

That might include:

  • A comprehensive fatigue lab panel to assess your immune system
  • Acupuncture to help regulate the nervous system
  • Naturopathic support for immune and mitochondrial function
  • Sauna or hydrotherapy to gently support circulation
  • Bodywork to help shift chronic tension patterns
  • Strategic pacing so you expand your energy window safely

Sometimes the most powerful intervention is simply helping someone stop pushing against their current limits.

Portland has a strong “push through it” culture—even in wellness spaces.

But healing often responds better to listening than to pushing.

A Note on Crashes:

One of the most confusing long COVID symptoms is post-exertional malaise.

You feel okay.
You do the thing.
You crash later.

This isn’t weakness.
It’s an energy mismatch.

When we help patients understand their current threshold—and build from there—the crashes often become less frequent and less intense over time.

Your body isn’t punishing you. It’s communicating.

Questions about long COVID symptoms that we hear all the time:

But, what about Sarah?

When Sarah started care, she wasn’t looking to “optimize.”

She just wanted to hike again without worrying about paying for it the next day.

  • We didn’t overhaul everything.
  • We supported her nervous system.
  • We addressed energy production.
  • We worked on pacing.

A few months later, she told us: “I don’t think about it all day anymore.”

That’s often how recovery shows up.

Not fireworks.

Just space.
Capacity.

Less preoccupation with symptoms.

If you’re in Portland and still not feeling like yourself, come visit us...

You don’t need to prove how ‘bad’ it is to deserve support.

If you’re navigating long COVID symptoms and something still feels off, we’re here.

At Root Whole Body, we begin with a Whole Body Health Assessment that looks beyond isolated symptoms and asks:

  • Where is your system under strain?
  • What has shifted since COVID?
  • What would steady progress look like for you?

No pressure.
No one-size-fits-all protocol.

Just thoughtful, integrative care—in a space where you don’t have to explain why you’re tired of explaining.
