Why Do a Fall Cleanse?
Perhaps by now you’ve heard some buzzing around the popularity of cleansing during the fall. Cleansing, in this sense, is the removal of specific items from the diet, or adherence to specific dietary guidelines. You’ve heard of juice cleanses, you’ve heard of the sugar detox, but why do a general cleanse and why do it now?
Traditionally speaking, fall is a time for change. It’s a natural transition between the abrasively hot, dry summer weather and the equally abrasive cold, wet weather of the winter. In this time of flux, we see a pattern where people come inside more often, the weather begins to cool and darken, and energy levels begin to lull.
During this time of flux, the body is accustomed to working through some of its toxic overload from the summer by forcing us to slow down, sleep more, and ingest more warming, soothing foods and beverages. In an effort to support our body’s natural processes, it’s very helpful to undergo a gentle cleanse at this time. Some benefits of gentle cleansing include:
- Liver stimulation and support
- Increased clarity and suppleness of skin
- Improved digestion
- Increased energy
- Improved immunity
- Improved quality of sleep
- Stabilized blood sugar
- Decreased inflammation
- Increased sense of general wellbeing
- Mild weight loss
- Reduced sugar and caffeine cravings
And the list goes on…
It doesn’t take very long for cleansing to prove its worth, either. In a span of only three days, digestion can improve, skin can start to clear up, inflammation can begin to decrease, and cravings for foods with high toxic loads can start to go away. That being said, a longer cleanse is going to help with longer-standing issues like blood sugar levels and regulation, liver support, and an increased sense of wellbeing.
Truthfully, a cleanse can last forever, as long as there is little to no stress about undergoing a lifestyle change for the person detoxing. Cleansing itself is a return to the roots of whole-foods eating, where the diet is devoid of harmful additives and preservatives. But in this modern world, it’s hard to always say no, so it is important to set aside time for the body to take in only goodness and let go of everything else.
