Thinking About Skin

Root Whole Body organic skin care

I think about my skin, of course.  I see it every day.  I inspect my reflection, I squint and frown at blemishes, I pluck out unwanted hairs.  But I never think about it too much.  I didn’t used to anyway.  I didn’t want to.  I had other things to think about.  Besides, I’m busy.  By the time I’m getting ready for bed, my mind is already in it.  Most nights, brushing my teeth and washing my face only happen because it’s a habitual practice.  I don’t have to be present to do those things.  I can let my body’s memory take care of things, while I concentrate on staying just awake enough not to walk into any door frames on my way from the bathroom sink to the bed.
I’ve also never liked using a lot of products.  I have an aversion to slathering mysterious goop all over myself, so until recently, my routine consisted of using one product on my face.  I’d purchase whatever cleanser I could find with the fewest scary-sounding ingredients, a yummy smell, an attractive label (don’t deny it: font is everything), and a reasonable price.

A few months ago, I was introduced to the Eminence products we carry at Root.  During my first training, an esthetician asked me if I used a moisturizer.  When I said no, she looked at me as if I’d just said I enjoyed drowning helpless kittens.  Wow, I didn’t realize what a big deal moisturizing was.  I mean, if I’d gone for a swim and was feeling a little dry, I’d rub some hair conditioner over my face.  It’s the same stuff, right?…right?…

Because I could not erase the terrified look on that esthetician’s face from my memory, I started to do my research, reading product labels and googling away until I was convinced.  It was time to purchase a moisturizer.  I even broke down and bought a toner too.  And I have to say, my skin looks and feels better.  The best part is, it only takes a tiny dab to moisturize, so I’m stretching my dollar, and I can apply it without applying much brain power during those barely-still-awake bed times.

I’m thinking more about the skin I’m in these days.  It’s my largest organ, and one I have to look at every day.  I don’t want to spend time scrutinizing it, so I’m going to take care of it and be confident that I’ll glow for a long time to come.
